Not very long ago I uploaded an EP of midi compositions I've been working on since March.

It's called Midi .1 EP, there are eleven tracks in total and I'd love to know what people make of it.

You can listen to it here.

I only had time to check the first one but the 2d platformer influence is OBVIOUS! Love those old video games.  Grin

2D Platformers? No, that's just the way .midis sound.

I really liked it, especially a musical case of the giggles. It was bouncy.

Wendy's profile at the account where the music is has a listing saying she's a 2d platformer fan. So I made the connection.  Grin

Oh yeah, Funderbunk is right.
You can make very good, realistic sounding midi files, but a lot of that depends on the abilities of the machine your working on and the quality of the sound samples you use, which isn't usually that high when you're using entirely free ones, like me, because I'm a skinflint and broke.

The platformer thing is entirely coincidental, at least with these versions of the tracks.

And Funderbunk, bouncy is exactly what I was going for.

I've uploaded te second part of the set.
This one does have a deliberate nod to old games. I bet you can't guess which one.  Tongue

You know, the only problem I have with it is that I really just can't ever get past the way midis sound. I get the same thing when I listen to something with the treble turned way up and the bass way down, or with harpsichords where there's this harmonic resonance that makes me want to kill. The music, though, I could tell would have sounded really nice if it was played on a piano that was in front of me and I had a double Maker's Mark and a Dunhill, and the bartender bore a striking resemblance to the actress who played Penny Hardwick in High Fidelity, I can't remember her name right now. If I could hear it in that setting, I would stop talking about pretentious bullshit and pay attention. I know it may seem like it might be a criticism, but trust me, if you knew me at all you'd know it's a compliment. Nothing makes me abandon my Maker's Mark.

Oh, I took it as a compliment.
I know midi music can be a bit of a turn off to people, because it often sounds as artificial as it is. The music I'm currently working on I'm composing in midi, but I'll be replacing pretty most of the actual midi tracks with real instruments. (No actual piano though I'm afraid as I can neither afford one or work out where it would go if I was lucky enough to end up with one.)

One October Morning and Tin Dog will be getting non-midi versions because there are ideas I have for those tracks when it comes to instrumentation that I think will be quite fun. The rest I'm going to resist redoing at least for the time being and concentrate on new things. : )
