This is probably in the wrong place, but I figured it would most likely be read here, and since this offer is time sensitive, I figured what the hell.

For anyone interested in actually getting their own domain as opposed to hosting at drunkduck or smackjeeves,  Dreamhost is having another promotion, which you can read about here. Your first year with them and the first year of your domain registry is only $10 (domains are usually $10 a year by themselves, and for the space and specs they're offering, including unlimited space and bandwidth, around $110 a year, so that's a crazy deal, especially if you're just starting up--I have a similar plan)

I mention this because I first signed up with them under a similar promotion and do not regret it for a moment, four years later. Plus, you have a chance to win one of several iPads that they're giving away, which seems right up everyone's alley. Just letting you all know!

Rob

nope....  perfect spot for it. Thanks for the heads up. ;)

Excellent. Also I just found out that the iPad contest is for anyone, and not just people signing up. Still an awesome deal, though =D

Damn. It's too bad this is offer is only good for new customers. I've been with DreamHost for years and been paying the $10.95 monthly fee for a while now because I haven't been able to afford the $120 one time charge for a year of hosting. I hate that companies only ever give these deals to new customers and never reward their existing, loyal customers.

And, of course, you have to be a Twitter user to enter the contest for the iPad. And I don't have a Twitter account, want a Twitter account or need a Twitter account. And I'm not about to make one just to enter a contest that I'm unlikely to win.

Damn.

The only thing stopping you from entering the contest is your complaining  ;)

Actually, no, upon further review I couldn't enter it even if I wanted to start a Twitter account especially for it. From the contest page: "Only twitter accounts with at least two tweets from BEFORE today (January 27th, 2010) are going to be eligible to win. "

I got dreamhost for like $26 for a year for my comic. Frankly, they're not perfectly reliable but they are quite good for the price.

I just went with the site most recommended by Wordpress, www.bluehost.com.  It's $7/month, and comes with a free domain name.  Though I'm not the most economically savvy, so maybe someone might want to doublecheck there and tell me if I'm actually getting screwed.

I have been quite satisfied with the service, however.

There have been a few hiccoughs and some downtime, especially over the past 2 years. They are not perfect. But they have served me well.

I'd really have to find an awesome deal somewhere else to even consider switching at this point.

I hear a lot of really good things about DreamHost, but I personally use Rydia.net and have been very happy with them =D  Always nice to have options around that are backed up by colleagues, though!

I'm sad because I bought their webhosting for a similar promotion last year, and now comes the time where I have to start paying $11 monthly to keep up with it. I'm thinking of putting the site I have hosted there (a side blog) on hiatus now, so I'll be paying $11/mo for nothing unless I think of something else to do with that space. Hmm...
